Chargers QB Philip Rivers 33 victories in his first 48 starts ties him with John Elway for third-best in the modern era -- behind Ben Roethlisberger's 35 and Dan Marino's 34. Rivers' 92.9 passer rating is bettered only by Marino, and his 2.16 touchdown-to-interception ratio is the best among qualifying passers in their first 48 starts.

When Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers tore his anterior cruciate ligament in January, doctors said it would be eight months before he would be ready to return to action. Four months into his recovery, Rivers is already on the field, going through practice, acting as if he never tore up his knee. Those who know Rivers best say he is a gym rat with an unmatched determination.

I'm great, said Rivers, who had ACL reconstruction surgery at the end of January. Rivers said that for the first time since the surgery he did the entire workout at the team's conditioning session on Thursday. I have a ways to go, said Rivers, who has been back golfing for two weeks and walked yesterday without a limp. But I'm certainly pleased.

Rivers to have surgery on torn ACL 1/21/2008 10:57:00 AM
Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers said Monday that he had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee a week ago in order to play in the AFC championship game, and that he'll need surgery on the torn anterior cruciate ligament in the same joint. Rivers made it through Sunday's 21-12 loss to the perfect New England Patriots despite the damage to his knee, which he sustained in an upset win over the Indianapolis Colts a week earlier.

Turner: Rivers is doubtfull vs. Patriots 1/18/2008 1:14:00 PM
Rivers practiced today and is still expected to test the knee Sunday morning to determine whether he can play against the New England Patriots. However, speaking on the NFL Network in the Chargers news conference, head coach Norv Turner said that he thought Rivers was doubtful to face the Patriots in the AFC Championship game. It looks like the Chargers will likely go with Billy Volek.
