Pittsburgh Steelers receiver and Super Bowl MVP Santonio Holmes has been formally arraigned on a misdemeanor marijuana charge stemming from a traffic stop. Pittsburgh police say they found three marijuana-filled cigars in Holmes' car when he was pulled over Oct. 23. Holmes was stopped because his vehicle was similar to one police were looking for in a drug sting.

Ankle sprain continues to bother Holmes 12/14/2007 8:57:00 AM
Santonio Holmes missed the two games before the loss Sunday at New England with a high ankle sprain and said his inactivity -- combined with the fact that he is not fully healed -- contributed to him not being a factor in the passing game. Holmes, who had only one catch for 13 yards, said he expects to be a much bigger factor this week. He said, however, that his ankle continues to be troublesome because it is the kind of injury that takes some time to heal.

The Steelers could welcome the return of three injured starters this week as they prepare to play the unbeaten New England Patriots Sunday. Wide receiver Santonio Holmes, strong safety Troy Polamalu and left offensive tackle Marvel Smith all could start against the Patriots, coach Mike Tomlin said today. Each has missed the past three games -- Holmes with a high ankle sprain, Polamalu with a sprained knee and Smith with a disc problem in his back.

The Steelers will be without Santonio Holmes, one of their starting wide receivers, for the game Sunday night at Heinz Field against the Bengals. Holmes has an ankle injury, did not practice Friday and was declared out. He has 39 receptions for a team-best 17-yard average and seven receiving touchdowns. Cedrick Wilson (11 receptions for 131 yards) or Nate Washington (17 catches for 257 yards and two touchdowns) will get those snaps.

Steelers strong safety Troy Polamalu and split end Santonio Holmes will run today, and Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said he is "cautiously optimistic" about their chances to play Sunday night against the Cincinnati Bengals.
